Joya

Thai in Park Slope.

What We Had

20140713-095340-35620458.jpg

My DH had the Pad See Yue – chicken and vegetables with noodles in a black bean sauce – nice flavor.

20140713-095341-35621214.jpg

I had the Gai Kraprow – chicken and veg in spicy basil sauce – a little sweeter than I generally like, but tasty.

Decor

20140713-095339-35619460.jpg

We ate in the back garden, but inside had an open kitchen concept with dark woods, lots of white tables and interesting lights.

Really great branding and modern, clean decor.

Service

Adequate.

Overall Impressions

Great value and a cute little place, but beware: cash only.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 for pretty good food in a cute atmosphere.

67 Burger

Burgers & boozy shakes in Fort Greene.

What We Had

My DH had the Mozzarella Bacon Burger.

20140323-083854.jpg

I had the bunless Avocado, Mushroom & Caramelized Onion Burger.

On a subsequent visit, we also had fries – both sweet and white potato varieties.

The burgers are juicy, well-seasoned, and prepared correctly. The fries are decent – a bit oily, but not too bad. The burger toppings are varied and exciting.

Decor

Neighborhood-specific mural on the wall, open feel.

Service

Counter service with tableside delivery as items are finished.

Overall Impressions

Not a bad little burger joint if you’re in the neighborhood.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 for solid burgers

Qi

Pretty upscale Thai near Union Square.

What We I Had

I stopped in to treat myself during a long day of holiday shopping and ordered off the lunch menu.
20140105-092028.jpg

I had the Spicy Thai Basil with chicken and steamed chicken & shrimp dumplings.

20140105-092130.jpg

Not bad at all. Nice chunks of identifiable shrimp in the dumplings and nice spice to the main dish. Lunch was light enough I didn’t feel too heavy, and had enough vegetables that it didn’t feel overly unhealthy.

I also had a glass of good pinot grigio.

Decor

20140105-092246.jpg

Pretty with lots of abacus (abacui? Abacusses?) and sleek furnishings.

20140105-092345.jpg

Service

Nice and unobtrusive.

Overall Impressions

Not bad. This looks to be a good date night place and it was certainly a nice lunch break from fighting holiday crowds.

Thistle Hill Tavern

Thistle Hill Tavern

American gastropub from the minds that brought you Talde & Pork Slope.

What We Had

20130824-142840.jpg

I had The Chop – Smoked 16 ounce Lucki Seven pork chop with red onions. — It was pretty good. A little dry. Overcooked – hard well – but still tasty.

20130824-142915.jpg

My DH had the Burger — Also pretty good but a little dry and overcooked (well, ordered mid rare). The fries were the best part.

20130824-142950.jpg

We split some Deviled Eggs – The chicken skin was both of ours’ favorite. Good. Not overly flavorful, but nice for a deviled egg lover.

Decor

20130824-143039.jpg

Pub style dark woods and local history pieces.

Service

Ok.

Overall Impressions

Not bad, but not as special as the other restos in the roster.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 because there are a lot of paleo-friendly options, but the execution wasn’t spot on.

The Green Table

A local farm-to-table joint serving updated American classics in Chelsea Market.

What We Had

20130713-125344.jpg

We started with Deviled Farm Eggs 4 Ways (Classic Southern, Wasabi, Bacon Relish, Pimento Cheese) – The bacon was, not surprisingly, our favorite.

20130713-125414.jpg

I had the GT Burger- Wrighteous Organics beef, kimchi, bacon & tomato relish on Amy’s roll – in a word: fantastic. Juicy burger, nice bright pickled punch from the kimchi, and round sweetness from the relish made for a well-balanced dish. Great dressed greens side, good bun.

20130713-125443.jpg

My DH had the Mac & Cheese – Goat, Colby, cheddar, and Parmesan with organic pasta and breadcrumbs – Cheesy and delicious with a nice dressed greens salad alongside.

20130713-125519.jpg

To drink, my DH had the Bloody, which was fantastic and spicy.

I had the Gin & Basil & Lime – It tasted like those green icee pop things in plastic tubes from childhood in the best possible way.

Decor

Tiny dining room – great if your fellow diners don’t cackle like great whooping loons on ecstasy.

Service

Attentive.

Overall Impressions

The food was great; the overall experience, not so much. Still, we want to re-visit. Just hopefully on a quieter day.

Rating

3.75 out of 5, though the knife through the temple caused by the aforementioned table of desperation really wasn’t the restaurant owners’ fault. It is something to be on the lookout for in small spaces.

Heartland Brewing Company

Large brewery & pub right off of Union Square.

What We Had

20130622-081622.jpg

My DH had the Heartland Big Bite Burger – angus beef with aged cheddar and applewood smoked bacon. Juicy and tasty burger, limp bacon and nice fries.

20130622-081654.jpg

I had the Smothered Steak Рblack angus steak covered with mushroom & onions and a side of saut̩ed spinach. Overcooked steak (ordered rare, got medium-well) but still juicy with nice Worcestershire seasoning and grill flavoring, good mushrooms & onions, and a metric ton (almost 2 cups) spinach. I was in spinach heaven.

We also had the house-brewed Summertime Apricot Ale and Not Tonight Honey Porter, both of which were nice.

Decor

20130622-081727.jpg

Black wood, exposed brick, lofty open spaces over the beautiful old bar and brew tanks in back.

Service

Decent.

Overall Impressions

Not a bad place to grab an unfussy lunch or drinks.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 for good for what it is pub food with a great selection of house brews – and plenty of room, to boot.

Lobo

Tex Mex in Cobble Hill boasting the best Tex Mex & margaritas in NYC.

What We Had

20130419-072053.jpg

I had The Alamo – a chicken enchilada and a beef enchilada topped with tex-mex con carne & a bean & cheese chalupa — not bad. Decent beans & rice, well-seasoned chicken and beef. Cheesy but not overly so. Wanted more chili, but the amount was actually perfect for the dish, I just had a craving.

20130419-072133.jpg

My DH had Chimichangas – beef in flour tortilla, deep fried and topped with sour cream — nicely seasoned and not too greasy.

We also had stellar table chips and salsa.

Decor

20130419-072208.jpg

Great ‘oldies’ 70s/80s rock over the sound system.

Lots of cow hide, weathered wood and deep blues. Updated cowboy decor.

Service

Friendly and personable service.

Overall Impressions

Not a bad little place. I’m not sure about ‘best in NYC’, but it was decent and hit the spot.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 for pretty great food – no real complaints.

Rice Thai

Thai in Prospect Park.

What We Had

20130413-073815.jpg

I had the Dry Tom Yum – As advertised, it was just like the soup but dry – chock full of seafood (shrimp, squid, mussels, fish) and topped with fried basil. Taste bomb. Sticky rice was good, but not as good as Pok Pok. Light on veg, but tasty.

20130413-073727.jpg

My DH had the Pad see Ew with chicken – DH complained that it didn’t have much taste, but that dish is never a flavor wallop without vinegar sauce.

Decor

20130413-073857.jpg

Really pretty wood panels on the walls, nice decor all around.

Vaguely French instrumental music, with crooner contemporary songs and classics.

Service

Fine. Being the old people hour diners we are, we had the place to ourselves for most of the meal.

Overall Impressions

Not a bad little place. Not the ‘be all end all’, but lots of things on the menu I’m dying to try.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 for a varied menu and solid dishes in a pleasant atmosphere.

Murphy Gonzalez

Murphy Gonzalez Pub & Cocina

This is what happens when an Irish pub and Mexican restaurant meet and have a baby. Near NYU.

What We Had

My DH had the Burger with Bacon & Swiss on an English Muffin – Overcooked but still juicy and flavorful with really good bacon. Decent fries that were a potato not long ago.

20130330-080639.jpg

I had the Steak & Eggs – Overcooked but flavorful and tender. Eggs were overcooked as well, but still tasty. Potato side was decent; surprise fruit side was great.

Decor

20130330-080846.jpg

More Irish pub than Mexican restaurant. Sports on the flat screens, open and spacious dining area.

Service

Friendly service – appropriately attentive for Sunday brunch.

Overall Impressions

An interesting mix prepared with enough skill that its all not just drunk food.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 for good standard food with enough promise that we may come back for Mexican fare.

El Pollito Mexicano

Standard Mexican fare.

What We Had

20130317-085415.jpg

I had 3 Tacos al Pastor D.F. Style with pork, pineapple & onions – Great taste, lots of pineapple. A little chewy, but the taste was good. Great guacamole.

20130317-085502.jpg

My DH had the Beef Burrito with rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, cheese & lettuce – Decent taste; not a lot of spice but pretty good seasoning.

20130317-085545.jpg

Side of Black Beans – Great taste with a hit of coffee.

The chips & salsa were ok. Not salted.

Decor

20130317-085633.jpg

Lively and colorful decor with upbeat Christmas music when we visited.

Service

Standard Mexican restaurant service.

Overall Impressions

Not bad. This place has a varied menu with Mexican classics & American Mexican style favorites with a little bit for everyone.

Rating

3.75 out of 5 for solid food in a lively atmosphere.
