Burgers & boozy shakes in Fort Greene.

What We Had

My DH had the Mozzarella Bacon Burger.

I had the bunless Avocado, Mushroom & Caramelized Onion Burger.

On a subsequent visit, we also had fries – both sweet and white potato varieties.

The burgers are juicy, well-seasoned, and prepared correctly. The fries are decent – a bit oily, but not too bad. The burger toppings are varied and exciting.

Decor

Neighborhood-specific mural on the wall, open feel.

Service

Counter service with tableside delivery as items are finished.

Overall Impressions

Not a bad little burger joint if you’re in the neighborhood.

What We Had

I had The Original – Parmesan crisp, shiitake mushroom, roasted tomato, caramelized onions & house ketchup – cooked medium-rare with no bun.

I also had an order of sweet potato fries with signature sweet salt (brown sugar salt).

My DH had the Manly Burger – Beer-cheddar cheese, bacon lardons, smoked salt onion rings, house ketchup & mustard spread cooked medium-rare on a bun.

He also had thin fries (plain).

OMFG amazing. Definitely in our top 5 favorite burgers ever.. And that sweet salt … That sweet salt on the sweet potato fries with the diablo or jalapeño ranch sauce – I heard a heavenly chorus. The meat was great – the burger had a perfect hard sear while retaining lots of juice and perfect doneness – and the toppings were all placed in service to umami. Truly fantastic.

Built for mass traffic with durable slate floors, commercial seating and an open floor plan.

Service

We visited on a Saturday around lunch and there was a 10-15 minute wait presided over by an iPad equipped hostess who seemed to be on top of things.

Our server seemed to be operating in a general state of confusion, but still managed to deliver our meals quickly.

Overall Impressions

Zomfg, where have you been all my life? We need to go back soon and often.

Rating

5 out of 5 for a nearly perfect meal. It’s not cheap as burgers go, but it’s worth it – and has officially unseated shake shack as my DH’s favorite burger place burger.

I had a bunless beef burger with portobello mushroom, crumbled bacon and goat cheese and a side of sweet potato fries.

My DH had a beef burger with crumbled bacon and fried cheese sticks on a potato roll with a side of horseradish cream and seasoned fries.

The burgers were cooked well, but both were really greasy. My sweet potato fries were battered in flour and greasy to the point of inedibility.

Overall Impressions

The burger menu was large, with lots of great topping options (including bunless). Not near as many meat selections as Bare Burger (and minus the ethos), but more topping options and better side item offerings.

The toppings however, are expensive (to be fair, so are Bare Burgers’). Our burgers ended up costing $17 apiece.

The DIY options were great, but I prefer having a few ‘stock’ burgers to choose from as backup.

Rating

2.5 out of 5 for strictly edible burgers; if Bare Burger wasn’t in the same ‘hood, the score may have been higher. Maybe. While the taste was there, both our meals were so bogged down in grease we regretted eating them.

What We Had

I had the Superman – 8 oz. beef burger with bacon, fried pickles, and sautéed onions – pretty great. The fried pickle/sauce/shredded lettuce combo ended up tasting like a grown up Big Mac. Nice thick and crispy bacon. Burger itself was dry. Onions were good.

My DH had the Original Pop Burgers – 3 mini beef burgers with pop classics, which were fairly ok but dry. Could be because of the massive grill fire we saw raging right after our order was placed.

Lots of wood (like log cabin levels) and graphic design elements.

Looks like a fun atmosphere with upbeat music, lots of TVs on mute, foosball and loungy chairs.

Good beer selection.

Service

Semi attentive waitstaff.

Overall Impressions

Meh. Sinking into a comfortable lounger was great, and my burger toppings were great, but the meat was just too dry.

3.5 out of. 5 – we’ve had better and worse.

Update: I am amending my rating down to an even 3.0 due to further input from the DH.

What We Had

I had the Roadhouse Burger (pepperjack, roasted red peppers, avocado) with elk on a tapioca rice (gluten free) bun.

My DH had the Maple Bacon Burger (maple bacon, sharp cheddar) with bison on a brioche bun.

Both burgers had great taste, were juicy, and were wholly satisfying. My bun was also great.

Not terrible.

Overall Impressions

I can’t really argue with this place’s ethos – grass fed everything; buffalo, boar, elk & ostrich on top of beef, poultry & vegetarian options. Gluten free & paleo friendly. This place represents one of the very best compromises in my DH and my eating styles – it’s a burger joint, which he loves, but a burger joint with slightly less horrible for you options, which I need in my life.

I can take exception with the screaming gaggle of children that finally, mercifully, left after holding the door open so every shred of warmth escaped the building – sometime after the onset of unruly child-induced headaches set in. But, it is a burger joint, and it is in mommy-drone central, so that just has to be worked around. We have since been back and the children weren’t as cringe-inducing in subsequent visits.

4 out of 5, despite the screaming groups of children.

What We Had

I had the Wake & Bake Burger – 2 beef patties topped with bacon & eggs. The burger meat was well-seasoned and juicy, and the whole big sloppy hot mess was fantastic for the first half (even though I lost the bacon early on). Then I came up for a breather/attempt to reposition everything back on the bun and the sheer amount of grease I had just consumed caught up with me and I couldn’t finish. It was great, but I couldn’t rally without running the risk of exploding.

My DH had the Dirty South Sandwich – fried chicken breast with pepper jack cheese & bacon. This was also a well-seasoned and juicy sandwich with great attention to flavor combinations. Not quite the hot mess the burger was.

Each sandwich came with fries and a little side of slaw. The fries tasted exactly like the fries you get at the fair. I don’t know how these wizards managed to capture that magical flavor, but they are now my junk food gods and I must stay far, far away until I am firmly entrenched in the exercise regimen I’ve been supposed to start since November.

The slaw was also surprisingly good. If I hadn’t just consumed enough meaty potatoey grease to choke a kitten I would have enjoyed it more. Having silverware would also have helped.

Service

The service wasn’t awesome and the food was s-l-o-w. So slow they must have a lone one-armed, one panned chef. With a dull knife. That, or they had to hunt the wily cow. Or find a fair from which to source the fries. Take your pick.

Overall Impressions

B.A.D or Breakfast All Day has a little for everyone, with a whole host of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. And we’re not just talking a Gardenburger, either. These guys are serious about catering to special needs diets.

It’s just too bad the food took so long (we’re talking over 45 minutes in a restaurant with 4 tables seated – 2 of which had their food already).

Rating

3.5 out of 5 because it took so long for the food to come out we both felt like we were grounded. If you happen to be walking past and happen to have an afternoon to kill, stop in. The fries alone are worth a trip. Consider calling ahead and picking them up at the to go counter.
